Rev. Dr. Kanisha L. Adkins is a life-long learner who holds several academic degrees including: a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Virginia Commonwealth University; a Juris Doctor from the University of Richmond, School of Law; a Master of Divinity from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University and; a Master of Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University with a clinical counseling concentration.

Kanisha is licensed by and has been a member of the Virginia State Bar as an attorney for over 2 decades.  Her education and training in the legal profession have allowed her to work for various agencies of the Commonwealth of Virginia such as the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation, the Virginia Employment Commission, the University of Virginia, and the Virginia Department of Social Services, to name a few.  For a few years, she took a break from the legal profession and was employed as a clinical counselor for various private counseling services where she worked with clients with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders.

Throughout her years as an attorney and a clinical social work professional, Kanisha has served as an ordained, Baptist minister.  She was raised in the church as a P.K. (preacher’s/pastor’s kid), and has been active in the church for as long as she can remember, either as a singer, choir director and pianist, bible study and Sunday school teacher, preacher, minister of worship or assistant pastor.  She currently serves on the Pastoral Ministry Team. And, in 2018, she enthusiastically added to her list of service and leadership, yoga “co-instructor”, when she and another associate pastor began teaching yoga to interested members of their church’s congregation.

Kanisha’s many different areas of education and work experience have shaped her into what she calls a “Professional Hybrid.” And she uses this “hybrid” approach to educate, empower and encourage the total person: Spirit, Soul and Body. She is a dynamic preacher, a talented writer and a published author.  Her first book HELP!  THERE’S A JUDAS ON MY JOB! 9 Steps for Surviving Workplace Betrayal (published in 2016) explores the ‘working relationship’ between Jesus and Judas to teach people how to deal with a “Judas” in any relationship that requires people to work together.

In her second book: LESS THAN VIRTUOUS – MORE THAN CAPABLE: Affirmations for Everyday Women, Kanisha explores women named in the Old Testament of the Bible – women who fall short of being ‘the virtuous woman’.  In fact, they are at times messy, but they are nevertheless marvelous.  Each story is told with the woman as the “star” of the story, giving voice to what the woman might have thought and felt.  Along with telling each woman’s story, Kanisha highlights and affirms the woman’s strength.  LESS THAN VIRTUOUS-MORE THAN CAPABLE is an interactive book that invites readers to write how those strengths have been or will be affirmed in their lives.   Both books are available online at Amazon.
