L. Roi Boyd, III is a Professor of Speech and Theatre at Virginia State University, Virginia Union University and an adjunct Professor of Mass Communications at Virginia Commonwealth University. He received his MFA degree from Virginia Commonwealth in 2002 in Theatre Pedagogy. He is a Professor, Guitarist, Drummer, and Actor; he has been teaching and directing in educational, community, and professional theatre for nearly 25 years in Virginia and North Carolina. He is a historian in African American Film history specializing in Race movies and Blaxploitation film. Boyd is also a filmmaker, having directed the RLP Productions film “Bell Blu” in 2008. In addition, he served as co-producer of the film “Black Wall Street: The Money, The Music, The People.” in addition to co-writing the theme song to the movie. Boyd serves as Co-Founding Artistic director of Cultural Libations, a multidisciplinary arts & humanities company.
As a scholar, Roi has presented research and moderated panels for The Black Theatre Network, The Southern Theatre Conference, and the Culturing The Popular Conference. As a Director, his work has been in produced in Norfolk, Richmond, Winston Salem, North Carolina, San Francisco and New York City. Boyd has been following the careers of The Jacksons and Michael Jackson for 44 years. He is an avid collector of pop culture and Jackson memorabilia for nearly 35 years. Roi and his life partner, Yemaja Jubilee, divide their time between Richmond and Charlotte County, VA.
